Steam Blocking Knitting, part 3 (video 2)

And the second one:

  1. Thank you for these videos Gail. The one part I hate about knitting is blocking. I normally wet block, but sometimes get in a terrible mess with a pile of wet knitting. I'm going to try this next time. What pattern are you knitting, it looks gorgeous.

    1. Thanks, Sam! Sorry I forgot to mention the pattern - it's Kara by Cecily Glowik MacDonald. I've had a great time knitting it; it has enough interest to keep it from being boring, but it's a very well-written pattern with a super simple lace.

  2. I was just going to say that as well! The cardi looks lovely.

Guess I should have watched through the end before commenting on how you don't stretch the lace out, huh? ;-?

Makes me feel better that I haven't completely been doing it wrong, though!

    1. I don't thing there's a "wrong" - just different ways of doing it. And yes, I usually have to stretch out the lace. Although this one opened up pretty well on its own.

I'm finding myself wondering how this cardi would look in one of your yarns, like maybe that Butternut colorway I'm drooling over . . .

  3. Gail, you're an ace! Thanks so much for posting these videos. I never knew the trick about setting the iron a tad hotter than your fabric would normally call for, and I also never steamed from the back. Then again, I never tried steam blocking until you mentioned it and I have the feeling I have probably been presetting on the fabric a bit too much so these videos will come in very handy when I block my next sweater. Now I best get knitting...

  4. I only got to see these videos now (really busy week, no knitting ) - they've turned out great! Really clear and instructive. I LOVE the cardigan btw!

  5. I finally had a chance to watch, and these are brilliant Gail! Thanks so much for sharing.

I never thought to steam block my knitting, but I love this idea. I hate messing around with regular wet blocking and currently don't have a good place to do it (if I ever finish my current project). This is a great alternative.

    1. I'm glad this was useful to you! I never really know if the stuff I show is old hat to people, LOL!

  6. OMG, you are a genius! I never had much luck with blocking before and kind of thought there was no point because I didn't ever see a difference. So I just tried your method out on two cardigans that I knit last year and didn't like wearing that much because the fabric felt tight and the sleeves were stiff. They have come out beautifully!!! The fabric is drapier and the rib sections are not grabbing like they used to, and it was super easy to do. I am going to get so much wear out of these now. I'll post some before and after photos soon. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
