Ever since I saw this tutorial on Pinterest the other day, I've been dying to make one of these box bags. I finally got a little bit of extra time today. Check out my new project bag:
The construction of this bag is genius - the exterior and lining are all done at the same time and there are no unfinished seams on the inside! The instructions in the tutorial are really clear, and I was able to make this in about an hour!
But at that point I'd run out of time, so I had to just get quick snaps instead of taking better quality pictures. Sorry! Don't worry though - I'm sure there will be more of these popping up around here!
How fantastic is the sushi-print fabric? I've had this in my stash for about 12 years, from the last time I was into sewing. I was planning on making pajamas out of it, but accidentally cut two left legs - perhaps that was my subconscious peeking through, since I definitely have two left feet! Anyway, that was the straw that broke the camel's back - I was fed up enough to put my sewing machine away and didn't get it out again until last year.
This little baby is now housing my Ava sweater, which is coming along slowwwwwwly:
I was so anxious to make this bag that I made it with what I had around. Since I've been making so many lightweight blouses, all I had was lightweight interfacing, and I really should have used a heavy weight. You can bet I'll be heading to the fabric store to pick some up in the next few days! But other than that and a couple more zippers, not much else is required. This is a great project for using up those leftover bits we all have laying around. You may have noticed that the lining (here visible only on the handle) is left over from my new Ginger skirt. My main fabric and lining fabric were 13" x 21" to go along with my 12" zipper, but the tutorial gives directions to vary the size of the finished bag.
I'd been curious about the construction of these bags for a while, so I was really tickled to find this wonderful tutorial! Have any of you made a bag like this?
I've loads of pieces of fabric I've set aside for project bags. Other than all those drawstring bags I made earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteThese box bags are great for all kinds of projects.
Love your sushi print.
hugs

Thanks, Gerry! You should give this one a try - it's so fun!
DeleteLooks fantastic Gail! I'm so glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking it back to me :)
Thanks, Libby! It's so generous of you to share this tutorial with everyone!
DeleteOh, now I really wish I sewed, that is a great bag.
ReplyDeleteYou could make a whole much of them and put your Christmas gifts inside, no wrapping.
The bag looks great! I can think of plenty of things I could use it for, but I seem to have lost my sewing skills for anything that's not quilting or pillowcases, so the tutorial is intimidating me. I think it's the zipper, which is silly, because I've put zippers in things before.
ReplyDeleteWhen I just read through the tutorial, it kind of intimidated me too. But when I actually followed along, step by step, it made perfect sense. It also made more sense once I realized that her format is pictures first, then description (sometimes I'm kind of slow on the uptake!).
DeleteThis is so cool! I love it! And the sushi print is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteI checked last night, and you can still get this fabric at Fabric.com! I might have to get some more and try those jammies again!
DeleteOh I just love the sushi print! I really need a bag like that. But ironically, I have too many projects going already to start on a project bag :P
ReplyDeleteYours turned out so well!
Hehehe - I know that feeling!
DeleteI found your blog by searching for nail stamping plates with knitting patterns on them LOL. I have a knitting blog at http://niksknits.blogspot.com, if you're interested. Love the bag. I've always wanted to make one, however, I'm too much of a scatter brain to take on yet ANOTHER obsession. It's a good thing that my best friend makes them.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny! I do have the stamping plate with knitting on it, but I've never used that pattern!
DeleteNice patterns on your blog, lady!
