Ensemble

It seems I'm smitten with mitts now.  I've made a second pair, and a headband to match:

I was able to make both items out of some leftover Knit Picks Swish Bulky I had in my stash - I'd say each item took about one hank.  I really like Swish Bulky - it's 100% merino, so it's very soft and silky.  Great for next-to-the-skin wear.

Both these patterns are free, and they're both quick and easy.  I made the headband in about an hour, and the mitts in about 3 hours.  The headband is a pattern called Turban(d), free on Ravelry.  The mitts are also a free pattern, the One Cable Mitts from Blue Sky Alpacas.

The bulky yarn and the 3/2 ribbing make this headband a very cozy thing to wear over the ears.

Who else is knitting mitts this fall?

  1. Turbans are not for me. But those gloves are awesome. I suspect I'm making some.

    1. I do feel a teensy bit self-conscious in the turban. I kind of think it's for the young girls - when they wear them, it's pretty obvious that they're not old ladies. With me, I think I'm on the cusp!

    2. Ha! Just reminded of these looking at your Ravelry projects and I have to say I've completely changed my tune. Now I'm all: I love the turbans! Goes to show my style is totally unreliable.

    3. Funny! Actually, I just wore this the other day, and felt like I was over the turban! Plus, I have a weirdly shaped head and it doesn't want to stay on!

  2. Cool! You look very posh in that headband, like a screen actress from black and white movies. As you know, I'll be making mitts soon, but first I have to finish the sweater :)

  4. I think I have 4 or 5 pairs of mitts already, but seeing all yours makes me want to knit more!

Or maybe convertible mittens. I'm wondering if those would be the best of both worlds.

  6. You are so crazy fast at knitting! lol :) They look great. I could never wear a turban but you pull it off. It would look great when you are all rugged up in a cardigan!

    1. I think you'd look cute in this, with your curls popping out!

  7. I promptly queued both patterns, they look like quick, fun projects. Although I'm not sure if the headband would suit me as well as it suits you. I have been wanting to knit a pair of mitts since the leaves started changing colors. Speaking of mitts, your comment about my handspun almost made me die laughing, I did NOT put two and two together until you mentioned it.

    1. Hehehe - I'm punny that way. I mean, funny.

The girl who wrote the pattern (and modeled it) has long, strawberry blonde hair like you, and she looks fantastic in it!

  9. What an awesome set. The color is so pretty. I wish I could get away with a turban. My head is much too big :)

  10. Super cute! The color is fantastic. It looks on my screen like a lavender-gray. I have probably a half dozen polishes of that variety, LOL!

    1. Yes, it is, lavender-grey. Pretty similar to Merino Cool and plenty of other polishes I know we both have in our stash!

  12. I have been meaning to knit mitts for the last few years ;) Yours are lovely. But, I love the headband - I've been keeping my eye on pinterest and it seems that turbans and headscarves are making a strong comeback - you're ahead of the pack - and it looks great on you!

    1. Hmmm . . . interesting! I have worn this a couple times now, and I really like how warm it keeps my ears.

  13. Well, IMHO the turban/headband/earwarmer is just so darn practical with the weather! ! ! Your's is stylish AND PRACTICAL couldn't ask for more.
Love the mitts! ! ! The color is terrific and the cables are great ! ! ! I'm finding I love cables more and more.

I have three pair of mitts on the needles and three pair that I'm trading off wearing this Autumn. Great for the cold steering wheel. Fingerless makes grasping the wheel easier than gloves.

Turbans just might have to find a place in my Queue!!
I'll just copy your Turban choice :^) LOL LOL

    hugs
