Following through.

Well, I took some "modeled" pictures of my Alabama Scout today, and I'll tell you:  they're not great.  I thought the soft afternoon light would be perfect for catching glints of the beads, but my camera disagreed with me.  In fact, it didn't even want to focus on my face, preferring instead the electrical cover plate next to me.  Can't say I blame it actually - I got very little sleep last night and I'm wiped out ;-)  So it might be apparent that I wasn't really into this photo shoot; but as much as I love this top, I'm ready to hang it up, post-wise, and move on.

Despite all that, I went to the trouble of doing my hair and putting on makeup.  I even tried two different outfits, but I think the photos will make it clear which I preferred.  Here's the first one:  the "fancy" one, with dressier pants and silver shoes, and understated jewelry.

I actually think this is a pretty OK outfit, but I just couldn't get a picture that relays how nice it is.

Even so, this top really says "Rocker Chic" to me (or at least, something a little more tough than the above).  I felt a lot more at home in the second outfit, with boyfriend jeans, studded ankle-strap flats, chunky jewelry and bright red lipstick.  (Which, by the way, I was terrified I would get on my beautiful top.  Rest assured, all is well.)  I even went all out and did the half-tuck:

By the way, I like that the last vestiges of my summer tan show up in these pictures.

I kept trying to stand right in the light that filters into the house mid-afternoon, hoping it would pick up the beads, but to no avail.  You can almost see them in this shot:

Here are a few more from different angles, which also show how it looks un-tucked - nice and flowy.  I did wash this the other day: by hand, air-dry for about 3 hours and then finished in the dryer on delicate (all inside out, of course).  It softened nicely.

And finally, the silly shot:

Hey camera!  I'm over here!  Quit looking at that cover plate!

And now I have a question to pose to you all that I've been thinking about a lot.  How would you style this top?  I think that I tend to get into a rut with certain items of clothing and end up always wearing them the same way.  Do you guys do that?  I ask because sometimes I read other bloggers' posts about their makes where they say, "I'm not sure what to wear this with."  I always seem to come up with ideas for other people, but not so much for myself!  I'm the same way with home decor too, by the way.  So if anybody would like to share an opinion, I'd love to hear it!

So this is (finally) the last post about this top.  But fear not:  I've already started (and almost completed!) a second Alabama Chanin project!

  1. Fabulous top. I love it part tucked in with the jeans. It would also look pretty neat with a pair of slim/almost skinny hipster black jeans. Or maybe I'd wear it tucked in with a pair of high waist culottes of a similar shade to your fab grey pants, with those awesome silver shoes.

  2. I love your top -- I would go the boyfriend jeans route too, complete with the half tuck (mainly because cold belt buckles touching my stomach when I bend over annoy me!) I think it would look great paired with something silver too, either matte or full-on shiny. Maybe put a belt over it and pair with a slender silver skirt for a going-out kinda look?

  4. i love this top with the boyfriend jeans, and i bet it would be great with skinny jeans too! i'm no good with styling... my go-to is jeans or a grainline moss skirt. your top is so great, can't wait to see the next project!

  5. Such understated fabulous-ness. And the 5th picture down is just lovely on a whole bunch of fronts.

  6. You look so pretty! Sorry to not have more insight, but I think you've styled it great in the second look -- the cuffed jeans, jewelry, swept up hair, all of it. I can't imagine anything topping that, personally. Have you tried it with a short-ish fitted skirt? I can see that being cute...or you could go all boho with it and pair it with a broomstick-style skirt. But I dig the jeans. ;)

  7. Oh that's beautiful! I think the jeans styling is very chic. I can't really think of other ways to wear it because it's a shape I never wear. My imagination isn't going there for some reason.

  8. The first look is really stylish, all you need is a tiny clutch or sling bag to complete the outfit.
I would wear this top everyday, it's my kind of top, a bit swingy and a bit embellished. I find that a swingy top looks best with a more fitted bottom.
I would wear it with a pencil skirt and a huge cuff bracelet and carry a huge tote bag.
I would wear it with capri pants and ballet flats or crazy heels.
I would also tie a knot at the side hem of the top and wear it over a grey maxi jersey skirt and sneakers.
I would wear it half tucked with city shorts (the kind that is more tailored and longer and tapered towards the knee)!!!
haha you can see how much I like your top :)
by the way, LOVE your hair both up and down and the red lippy!!

    1. Forgot to mention that I LOVE the way you styled it with jeans, but then again I think you already know that :)

  9. I'm not too good at styling and hence I don't bother. Most times I dress for comfort. So there's where my partiality towards jeans comes in:)

  10. Beautiful top! I really like it with the jeans and would wear it with dark skinnies and heels as well. Love it! Your pics are gorgeous too!!!

  11. Looks lovely with jeans - I think the a-line needs a skinny or more fitted lower half to balance it. Look number two is pretty spot on!

  12. I absolutely love how your top turned out and I LOVE how you styled it with jeans, etc. I would love to see this paired with black skinny jeans or black cropped pants ~ you would look equally awesome in either of those.

  13. I really like the second look. This idea might be out of season, but I think it would also look great with an above-the-knee fitted skirt.

  14. I didn't realize that you sewed the whole shirt by hand! I thought the side seams are done with the machine! Now I'm even more amazed :) I actually really like your first styling. Have you tried to wear the shirt tucked into a pencil skirt? It might be too much fabric though....

  15. You've done a beautiful job with this Gail. I would wear it with dark skinny jeans and either flats for daytime or heels for evening. Mind you, that seems to be my default these days!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has difficulties with styling. I think that's why I like dresses so much, most of the styling is done for you!

  16. I actually love both outfits so much that it's hard for me to believe you are having trouble styling it! I keep thinking black fitted pants or a pencil skirt... which is my rather boring go-to "styling" and probably doesn't help one bit!

  17. Ooh yeah! That second "look" is great! Especially with the half-tuck. Very youthful without looking like you are trying too hard ;)

  18. I like both looks. I think it's fantastic when you have a piece that's versatile enough to wear jeans or trousers, all the while looking marvelous! You did a really great job putting this together.

  19. As a non sewer, I still don't comprehend how you make this top, but I like how you styled it. The first is like an office, tailored look. The second is street style for sure! My fave, of course.

  20. Gosh, this is so fantastic! I love it on you! I prefer the second way you've styled it- it looks great!

  21. I love it with the jeans for sure! It looks like a great outfit and you seem much happier with it.
