Karanfil*

Yesterday I started my first spring knitting project:

This is Kim Hargreaves' design Ghost, from her Calmer Collection book.  A nice, longish, slouchy belted cardigan.  Perfect for early spring.

I had originally started another Kim Hargreaves design with this yarn - Audrey - but after I got half way up the back I decided I just wasn't crazy about it.  It's a very pretty sweater, but I really don't like the feeling of clingy knits.

When I reorganized my knitting stash about a week ago, I discovered a whole bag of Calmer in Carnation (pink) that I'd forgotten about, because I put it in a place where I don't usually keep yarn.  So instead of the 15 balls I thought I had, I actually have 25!  I honestly don't remember buying so many bags of it, but there was a deal from Jannette's last year that obviously was too good to pass up!  I remember it being $20 a bag - a steal for a yarn that generally retails for $14 a ball!

Has anyone else started on spring knitting?  My list for spring is kind of long, so I thought I'd better get going!

*Karanfil is Turkish for carnation.

  1. What a pretty color! I don't like the feel of clingy knits either-- they make me feel sweaty and gross, plus I prefer a bit more modesty. The "Ghost" pattern is lovely! It's such a nice style, too-- perfect to throw on when you need a little extra warmth! Oh, and I really like Calmer! I wasn't sure I'd like knitting with cotton, but it makes such a nice, light fabric!

I'm still working on cooler weather knitting, for now, mainly because I'm more drawn to fall/winter type cardigans.

    1. Hehehe - I've heard Calmer referred to as "Crack for Knitters" and that's not far off, in my opinion!

Interestingly, I'm more drawn to spring/summer knits - although they're a lot less practical!

  2. I used Calmer in the first sweater I ever knit. It was a joy to knit with. I've often wondered how it wore but it was a gift and I've never inquired.
After a long knitting hiatus (socks don't count), I'd like to knit something for spring. Not sure what or if I'll even get to it but the idea is there.

    1. Calmer wears really well - you can machine wash it and run it through the dryer for 10 - 15 minutes, and it's good as new!

  4. I also fell into the Janettes Calmer yarn sale trap! But now it's been discontinued and so I'm glad I have it! I love Ghost and haven't thought about that book in a while. It's around here somewhere, maybe I'll pull it out and copy you ;) Yes, I'm doing summer knits now too!

    1. I love Jannette's! My wallet doesn't love it so much though! I'm glad too that I have the Calmer. Has the whole yarn been discontinued? I've been looking for information about it but haven't been able to find anything positive. Such a pity if it is.

This will be the third sweater I'm making from that Calmer book! You should go ahead and copy - I think it's a great, casual sweater!

  5. Ahh, spring knitting -- it's been on my mind although we suddenly got a bit of snow here in NY this weekend so go figure! As for discovering that you have 25 balls of Calmer, what a treat.

    1. Yes, lots of stockinette :-) But much bigger yarn and needles than I'm used to, so it shouldn't be too bad. Also, the Calmer is such a treat to knit.
