A week later I had it in my hot little hands, and the other day I took some pictures of all the designs to share with you all, because I think this magazine has some really neat stuff! There are lots of sweaters in this one I could consider making. This magazine is also different from a lot of my vintage knittng magazines in that each design has a name, like modern patterns tend to. Most of my older magazines just have numbers for the patterns.
So without further adieu, I give you "Winter Sport Fashions . . ."

I really love the cover design, especially in this vivid red. It's hard to see here, but this sweater has a zippered front closure.

Deep raglan brioche stitch sweater with oversized turtleneck that doubles as a hood. Yes, please!!

"Quiet down! I'm on the phone!" I think it's interesting that the bottom hem is turned back the way you would do on sleeve cuffs. Doesn't seem very practical!

OK, I went ice skating just about every day after school when I was a kid, because we lived across the street from a pond. I'm certain I never looked this cute!

Somehow these motifs have a tiki feel to me . . . not very conducive to skiing. Or sweater-wearing. But I like it!

So classic in black and white. But would you get a load of those eyebrows?! What's going on here?!

You can't see it here, but the contrasting insets down the outside of the leg and at the shoulder have a leaf lace pattern. I think this is pretty slick, although I don't see myself ever knitting it.

And of course you have to have hats and mittens.
So what do you think? As I write this, it's 70 degrees and sunny - a little hard to think about winter. But I love looking through vintage knitting magazines no matter what time of year!

DeleteThese are great! I would have to say that my favourite is Ice-Cap-Ade and I think Mr. Stitch would look good in Too-Boggan. I so hear you about the nice weather. It's been beautiful all week here and I can't even think of the fact that in a couple of months we'll be freezing, especially after not having had a winter last year at all. Brrrr!
ReplyDeleteI love the shawl collar on Two-Boggan. Sadly, Hubby doesn't like them. But I agree that would look great on Mr. Stitch! And I'm surprised how many people mentioned Ice-Cap-Ade as their favorite! I like it, but it's not my fave.

Oooof - so glad we don't have to do that on a daily basis these days! I don't mind wearing a girdle occasionally, but I draw the line at corsets!
DeleteAn enviable collection! Admittedly, I'm not as fond of "St Moritz" as you are, but "Slalom" and "Ice Capade" - yes, please, and at least six others too. Now I'm going to have to search the vintage pattern shops, darn it.
ReplyDeleteBut "Ski Tow", aka the Man on the Phone: I recognized him! This design was reprised as style no 8404, offered in men's, women's and child's sizes, in Bear Brand's "Aran Fisherman Sweaters" booklet, which someone gave me back in the'90s. No publication date, but all the photostyling is from the same era; cover price $1.00 for just eleven patterns, so maybe a few years later?

DeleteOne thing that was really interesting that I wasn't able to capture with my camera is that the on man and boy in the Two-Boggan picture, the shoes are drawn in and painted - somehow they're not photography!!
HAHAHAHA this is hilarious! The tightly-belted baggy pants *slay* me. How totally fun -- and I agree that some of these designs have a lot of potential. I am mad about Ice-Cap-Ade, so clever and lovely stitch pattern.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I kind of like it! And in the recent issue of Threads, the part where they show what's on the runway at the moment, they were showing high-waisted pants with wide legs - a silhouette very similar to this.

DeleteNo immediate plans, but I really wanted the collection in my library. I also noticed that someone has already entered the St. Moritz pattern (though no other patterns yet) and the booklet into the Rav database! Look for the booklet under the rather long full title of "Bear Brand and Fleisher Yarns Vol 38", etc., if you want to add it to your Rav library.
