Cuff Parade

All this business about making shirts for Hubby has made me want some new button-front shirts for myself as well!  That inspired me to take a look through my closet the other day at the blouses I already have (and I have a lot!), and as I did so, I noticed that there are a lot of different ways to do the cuffs.  So I took some pictures to share with you.

These are all years old, and with the exception of one, bought from shops - mostly Anthropologie.  You can always count on Anthropologie to give a quirky twist to a basic wardrobe item!  None of these details would be very difficult to adapt to a basic shirt pattern.  So many ideas!

bow-tied with piping

half slit cuff, on inside of sleeve

full slit cuff, on outside of sleeve

hand stitched contrast, with netting at edge

that blouse also has the contrast on the front placket and collar

classic triangle-topped placket with two-button cuff

I don't know what this style of placket is called to differentiate it from the one above

square-topped placket with crochet edge

hammered-on snaps

French cuff tied with a self-fabric bow

border-print cuff with ruffled edge

classic one-button cuff with curved edges and placket

very narrow cuff - Pattern Runway Pussy Bow Blouse

I'm pretty sure there's at least one new blouse in my near future - I wonder if I'll add in any of these ideas?

  1. What a rich assortment! I love the ones with ties instead of buttons-- I used to have a blouse with elbow-length sleeves that had narrow ties at the cuffs. I love the look of blouses, but find I never wear the ones I have. I'm not sure if it's because RTW ones don't fit me well or that I'm just spoiled by the comfort of knits.

    1. I love that one too, and it would be so easy to adapt any pattern to do that!

  2. What a great (and very sensible!) idea to use things you love in your existing wardrobe as inspiration. I love the French cuff with the self fabric bow and the border print one.

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

    1. Yes, those are actually two of my very favorite blouses! I've got some navy blue dotted swiss on its way to me for making a blouse . . .

    1. I'm glad you found it interesting! I wasn't sure anyone would be into this post, honestly! But I wanted to have a visual reminder for myself!

  4. Look at all those lovely cuffs! My faves have to be the handstitched one and the bow tied - they wouldn't be hard to do would they - but they'd be so effective. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this idea :)

    1. Honestly, none of these would be hard to do I think. I keep thinking that if I find a coordinating fabric, I could use some of my leftover netting from the tulle skirt I made to do a collar and cuff like the one with the contrast stitching, but I haven't come across anything yet.

    1. Isn't the crochet cute? It goes up the front button placket and around the collar too!

    1. Hehehe - I've been about the same size for the last 15 years, so most of these are ages old! I love them all so I keep them around!

    1. I'm so bad at thinking outside the box, I though it would be a good idea to put these here to remind me!

    1. I guess I should start checking out RTW details more often! I do love to wear blouses with skirts in the spring - it used to be my "uniform" until I became all schlubby.

  11. You should make a collage of these. They're art! Never paid attention to cuffs before. Now I will.
