Entering 2012 Seamlessly

I've been thinking about this for quite a while, and I'm going to take the leap . . .

I, Gail of Today's Agenda, am taking the Seamless Pledge until June 30, 2012.

For this six month period, I will refrain from buying

any new clothing or shoes

and instead turn my attention to using what I already own.

My reasons for doing this are the same as a lot of the participants:  Because I have closets full of clothes and shoes, and "nothing to wear."  Because I dislike feeling that I'm swayed by marketing.  Because I would like to be more thoughtful and less impulsive in my purchases.  Because I'm becoming increasingly uncomfortable with excess and consumerism.  Because I'm beginning to prefer my hand-made items and want to focus on creating garments of quality.

So, we'll see how this goes.  What I know about myself is that I generally lose interest in doing something as soon as I've stated an intention to do it!  But I think this could be a really worthwhile experiment, so I'm going to do my best to stick with it.

If you're interested in doing this too or learning more about it, you can read the original statement on the Seamless blog.  Andrea at Stitch Parade also wrote a very lovely post about it a month or so ago, which is where I found out about it.

Happy New Year!

  4. No new shoes for six months?? Now that takes willpower. :D

  5. That's a great pledge! I know I wouldn't be able to do that, but what I'm doing instead is another idea from Pinterest: turn all my hangers backwards today and only turn them the right way after I've worn whatever's on that hanger. If it's still backwards in 6 months (assuming the weather has given me a chance to wear it), out it goes!

  7. Happy New Year to you too, Erika!

Carrie, I will definitely need willpower for the shoe part, even more than the clothes!

SKP: That is a really great idea! Although, honestly, I think I'd have a harder time with that than with this challenge. I still have a lot of "new" clothes and shoes - things over the last year that I've never worn. So I think that will make it easier. At least, I'm hoping!

  9. I know you were on the fence before when Andrea posted - have you changed your mind? At various times I'm either excited, or really nervous about it!

  10. I love this pledge and commend you for making it for the next six months. Hmmm, I want to join you but there is this pair of shoes that I've been coveting ... and they're on sale ... and ....

I can live without them so maybe I'll join you! Happy New Year, sweetie.

  11. You're awesome, Evelyn! I originally wanted to make the pledge for a year, but was afraid I couldn't hold out that long!

Happy New Year to you too!

  12. I'm still thinking about it-- you know, I rarely buy clothes new anyway (and when I do, they're not fun clothes-- usually all-weather gear for work), so I'm really considering it. I just hate limitations and goals because I a l w a y s fall short of my expectations and feel really bad about myself. :( BUT-- I'm really curious about whether or not I can do it! Ack! What to do?!
