A not-so-little something.

A few months ago, just before my birthday, I came across this tutorial for an awesome zip bag made from printed fabric.  I HAD to have one, so I ordered a fat quarter of the fabric from Spoonflower as a birthday gift to myself.  I haven't had much energy or time for sewing this week, but I did manage to cut this project out on Wednesday, and sew it together yesterday.

I did a few things differently on my bag from the tutorial.  I had my fabric printed onto organic cotton sateen, which has a lovely sheen but is quite thin.  To give my bag a bit more heft, I used fusible fleece on the outer rather than regular interfacing.  The added weight also helped because I used my leftover orange lining fabric for the inside.

I used a nylon zipper because the colors are more fun and I hate metal zippers on bags - they always ding up my nails!  After I finished the bag I felt like it needed a little some thing more, so I popped on one of my tassel keyrings.

At 9" x 14", this bag is quite a bit bigger than the ones I usually make.  I think I like it though, although obviously I haven't had a chance to carry it around yet.  Doesn't it just say "Summer?!"

Because of the way the fabric was printed, the palm trees on the front are a bit taller than those on the back.

The corners on the bag are boxed:

I have a pretty sizable piece of that matte black sequin fabric left.  I'm thinking it will make a great bag, using this pattern.   But for that I probably will have to cut the sequins out of the seam allowances, so it will be a project for another time.

  1. Cute!

I can't sew bags. I don't know why but they always come out horrendous!

    1. Hahaha! That's funny! It took me the longest time to get over my confusion about how to attach the lining when I first started making them. And there are definitely some tricks that make success more likely. As with everything, practice makes perfect!

    2. Nakisha, a great first bag pattern is Simplicity 4265 (also a cute dress pattern!), the zipper instructions are awesome.

  2. Oooh, this is my favorite of all your bags! As a Floridian-in-exile, the palm trees and pops of sun orange and brilliant sky blue really speak to me. And the tassel echoes the palms -- clever!

I want to try out Spoonflower one of these days. Actually, I want to print my own designs (which do not exist yet, haha). But someday, maybe even soon, as I ordered a Wacom tablet and Corel Painter this week ...

    1. I know - I love palm trees! They make me feel calm . . .

I've only purchased prints (kits) already existing on Spoonflower. Both the things I've bought have been really nice quality, and they have more and more substrates they've added.

  3. I love your bag! And considering my warm feelings to Puerto-Rico I think I would like to make this awesome accessory too. Who knows, I might visit the island again... :-)

  4. This is cool, and a sequined one would be great for evenings out. I wish I could carry a clutch bag but somehow I always need my hands free to carry all sorts of stuff. Sometimes I even sling my hangbag cross body style haha, not very stylish!

    1. I know! I love the look of a clutch but I also hate having my hands unavailable! I only use clutch bags occasionally, but I sure do love making them!

  12. Coveting. You are such a skilled seamstress. I had brought your bag to my mum's and she was checking out that project bag you have/made for me. She was so impressed with it, totally noting how you lined it wonderfully and how clever you were to cover the zipper end like that.
