Accidental Hemlocks

Yesterday I made two more Hemlock tees.

Even though they've been on my list for a while, I hadn't really planned to make them until the weather warmed up a bit.  But since my serger was already threaded with green from making the Renfrew the other day, I decided to just go ahead with the green one.  And then I figured that as long as I had the pattern out and ironed, I may as well make the turquoise one!  So . . . two new t-shirts!

Don't ask my why I love this very oversized style so much, and yet the Lola was not for me!  What can I say?  I'm an enigma!  Actually, it probably has more to do with the balancing effect of wearing an oversized top with skinny jeans.

Here's a little life tip:  when Life (or in this case, Girl Charlee) hands you lemons (or in this case, fabric too thin and drapey to make the green and white striped dress you'd planned on) - make a Hemlock!  I made these two in the span of about 3 hours.

I'm particularly pleased with the turquoise one.  I got this 1-yard remnant of burnout tissue knit at Vogue right before the Stash Diet started for $2.99.  The color is so gorgeous - these pictures don't do it justice.  It's like a clear summer sky.  I had to channel my inner Mad Housewife to get this big tee out of one yard, but I managed it!  So proud!

And I wanted to get these posted in time for the February Stash Diet Round-Up, which Andrea will be hosting this month.  If you're taking part in the Diet and haven't yet sent in your photos and links to her, go over and do that before Friday!

  3. I so love both of these. Perfect for travelling wear, right? The colours are amazing and it makes me want to grab a bunch of knit fabric in fun textures and prints (I only have solids in the stash, and only two or three pieces at that) so something to think about for my credit purchases. Also, I wrote a long comment on your Lola post yesterday and the computer gremlins ate it so I will just repeat what I said over e-mail.

  4. Love the tees!

I've heard that very often regarding GC; the fabrics come much thinner than is expected based on the description. Has this happened often to you??

    1. Yes, sadly it has happened pretty often. As always with online ordering, you have to be willing to take a gamble!

    2. Same here with GC, but they could save a lot of trouble by just being consistent in their descriptions. Those mid-weight knits of theirs? Who is touching that fabric and thinking anything but tissue-weight? ; )

I'm happy with the one I kept (returned two others) but scared to order again.

  6. :D I love that we are "sew" in tuned :P I love these makes and I can only imagine how much more gorgeous the blue top is in real life. I need to read about what happened with the Lola! Maybe I need to follow your lead (again) and divert my plan!

  7. They look so pretty! Love the cloudlike blue one. One can never have too many tshirts no?

  8. LOL! This cracked me up, because the thread color in my serger has often decided what I would sew next - anything to avoid re-threading it.

I love these two t-shirts you made & I'll be making the hemlock, too. I think the grainline patterns are well designed. I've had very good luck with the Scout Tee - made several and wear them all the time.

PS I bought a whole wad of knit fabrics from Girl Charlee some time ago and was very disappointed with how thin they were. I should have returned them, but didn't. I won't be buying from there again, though.

  12. Great tees! I totally agree on slouchy tees with skinny jeans. It's my go-to wardrobe staple. I should get onto some hemlocks. Do you think it could work with a medium weight, not very stretchy cotton/modal knit (maybe jersey/interlock) or does it need a light, drapey, slinky knit?

    1. I think this works with a lot of different fabrics, because it's so oversized. Eleyna (http://eleynagomez.wordpress.com/) just made one in sweater knit that's really cool!

  13. I have found that not all oversized tees (or sweaters, for that matter) are the same. But when you find one that you really, really like, it's like GOLD! Love your new tops.
