A Post on DPNs

Circular knitting on DPNs is a little different than with a circular needle, so I made a video showing some things to keep in mind.   I mention having the work on 3 or 4 needles, but you can certainly have your work distributed on any number of needles greater than 3 - you'd just need to buy more sets of needles, since DPNs usually come in sets of 5.

I've been having a little trouble with YouTube the last few days because somehow I ended up with 2 accounts.  (I think Google automatically made me a new YouTube account a while ago which is linked to Google+)  All the videos I've posted before this one are on my old "channel" but this one posted to the new "channel."  I'm hoping to figure out a way to consolidate them, but I don't have a whole lot of extra time to deal with it right now, so I just wanted to let you all know!

  1. fantastic Gail, thank you! I am just approaching the sleeve stage of my first ever knitted sweater and have been wondering how I'll manage the DPNs. So this is really helpful. And nice to hear your voice too!

  2. Thanks so much, it's really really clear and doing so much to help me get over my fear of DPNs!

    1. Nothing to fear: unlike with sewing, with knitting you can have as many do-overs as you want! All you have to do is take it out and try again! I find that very reassuring :-)

  3. Holy cow - this is an advert to stay the hell away from 4 needles :-) Like you, I am totally in the 3 needle camp. Mind you, I've never actually used DPNs because I like magic loop. Well, I don't "like" magic loop so much as I think I'll like it that much more than carrying around a project on 3 pokey needles. I only like circulars. The other needles seem to open.

    1. Hahaha - 3 needles 4ever!! You should try the DPNs sometime! I'm hoping to take a picture soon (worth a thousand words) to show a way to make the DPN projects more travel-friendly.

    1. I will try to remember to share if/when I figure it out! May be a while though - it's not high priority at the moment!

  5. I learned hat decreasing on three DPNs. When I tried toe up, the pattern had me use four DPNs. That was an adjustment, but I like it now.

    1. That's right - not only different strokes for different folks, but also for different projects!

  6. Do you think that one can do fingering weight fingers (for gloves) better on DPNs than with magic loop? I ask because I'm about to make some as an Xmas gift. You might have to do a tutorial! :-)

    1. I think it's definitely easier to do glove fingers on DPNs. I've never done it with Magic Loop, but I'd think the cables would really be in the way.

Funny - I have a pair of simple gloves planned for this fall, and was thinking to do a KAL or some videos for that!

    2. That's what I've been thinking - I've never made glove fingers so I have no actual experience. Hmmm, may have to go out and get some DPNs. Expect to hear from me and thank you for potential that KAL in advance!! :-)

    3. You deserve some DPNs ;-) Yes, I'm thinking the glove KAL will happen but may not be for a few weeks.

  7. OMG I tried magic loop the other day and almost lost my marbles!!! I'm much more in favor of dpns - that long circular seemed so cumbersome!

However, I would love to try socks 2 at a time so I might have to just get over it :)
